CD Duplication is the term to provide blank media burning, or CD copying. In the same way you would write (burn) a CD on your own computer, blank discs have the data burnt to them. Printing onto the surface of the CD is also possible using a variety of methods such as thermal printing, inkjet or digital and like wise most companies offering CD duplication can print the books, inlays or card packaging digitally for example.
It is not always known however that CD duplication does not provide a true shop ready product or in fact that for larger volume of 500 units plus, CD duplication is often more expensive. Only replication can provide the genuine retail product and although it is common for a minimum press of 500 or in some cases 1000, the price per CD is far lower.
That said though, many bands, labels or even companies need a low volume of CDs copied for demos or trade shows and quite often at short notice. For this, CD duplication is ideal and can still provide an attractive looking product. Or if you need a larger volume of CDs but a small number of them quickly, the bulk of them could be replicated while you use CD duplication for the immediately required quantity.
It is worth pointing out that only replicated CDs can provide 100% compatibility because they are all pressed from the same stamper whereas CD duplication burns the data onto existing blank media and hence every burn can be different – all discs have errors on them and while they would not affect the actual data, they could affect the playability on some drives. There is no way to determine whether a CD that has been made via CD duplication will cause problems on a particular drive. If you need to be 100% certain that all CDs will play without any problem, you would need to go for replication rather than CD duplication.
