Travan tape storage format continues to fulfill the burgeoning backup needs in a cost effective manner. Travan tape format has a proven track record and has established a solid heritage of long-term durability, backup performance, cost efficiency and scalability. With Imation TR 7 tape cartridges, the data managers can seamlessly free up space from hard disks by transferring their business-critical data onto the Travan tapes.
In this article, I am going to brief you about the safety precautions and guidelines that can help you to get maximum performance through out the working life of Imation Travan tape cartridges. Don’t open the upper door of the Travan tape cartridge and touch the tape reel. By doing so, the protective magnetic layer might get damaged, which can cause media deterioration. In order to protect the Travan tape cartridges from dust and other contaminants, keep your working environment and storage shelves neat and clean. Don’t expose the tape cartridges to extreme temperatures and moisture. Always store the backup tapes in their plastic cases. The Imation Travan tapes should not be used beyond the recommended archival life.
The Travan data tapes should be removed form the tape drive when they are not in use. When the LED light of tape drive is ON or is blinking, this indicates that the tape reel is moving. Wait for the LED to turn off, and then you should remove the Travan tape from the drive. It is highly recommended that the Travan tapes should be given some time so that they can acclimate to their surrounding environment after exposure to an environmental temperature change. This allows the Imation Travan tape cartridges to stabilize and as a result you are provided with superior storage performance.
Always keep the backup tapes away from heat sources (warm air ducts, heaters etc.), magnetic tools and electromagnetic fields. Do not expose the cartridges to direct sunlight. Imation Travan tapes’ part numbers are listed below:

Tape guiding components of Travan tape might get misaligned if it accidentally drops. In such situation, the tape cartridge might only be suitable for a single use. It is better to copy the stored data from the dropped cartridge to another Travan backup tape. Before using the dropped Travan tape, it has to undergo a re-tensioning pass. Re-tensioning process restores the proper tape tension that ensures perfect tape-head contact, thus resulting in dramatically reduced error rate and longer archival life. Periodic re-tensioning of Travan tape cartridges is not required under normal conditions. Before performing tape re-tension, allow the backup tape to acclimate to its surroundings.
Tape re-tensioning is recommended under the following conditions:
- The Imation Travan tape is new, and you are using it for the first time.
- The Travan tape has not been used for over 30 days.
- The Travan tape drive has reported a failure code during the read-write operation. Tape re-tensioning can solve the problem.
- Travan tape has been exposed to temperature change.
- Backup operations are proceeding slowly.
Routine care and safety precautions will ensure long term protection and improved storage efficiency.
